Movie Clichés

Hi, check out my other blog I started last week: Movie Clichés

Doesn't mean I've stopped working on this blog. You can always find the link to the blog under pages: "Movie Clichés"

Blog description

This site is all about the fantastic world of movies and more precisely about its huge amount of clichés.

In almost every movie I watch there is something very "familiar" and from now on, every time I notice it, I will write it down on this blog.

For the moment, you could divide my posts into six different categories:
1. Quotes
Example: "It's not you, it's me"
2. Characters
Example: The stupid teenage horror character
3. Scenes
Example: The ripping-off-each-others-clothes sex scene
4. Places
Example: The local gas station
5. Links
Example: A blog post from another blog
6. Random
Example: Unrealistic Morning Routines

Special days:
Every Monday I will post a new quote
Every Wednesday I will post a new link to a page/article dealing with movie clichés

Every Friday I present to you a well known movie character
Scenes, places and random posts will come irregularly for now.

I will name my posts like this "Quote/Character/Scene #1, 2, 3" etc. and label them in their respective categories. To the right on the blog, under labels, you can click the tags and that way display all posts in that certain category.

Please comment and give feedback, it helps and gives me motivation to keep on writing.

Horror Clichés - Character Behavior

A list of five horror clichés concerning character behavior. This is not a top list, just a list of five things I came to think of. These examples are mainly taken from modern horror movies.

1.  Damn, I fell!

The Situation: You’re in a really bad situation, a monster, ghost or whatever is chasing you (slowly of course).

Question 1: What will a horror character do?
She will stumble and fall, crawl a few meters and struggle to get up, just like in a dream when you’re really helpless. Also, she’ll stop within a radius of 100-200 meters from her previous location.

Question 2: What would I do?
I would run and not stop till I reach a safe place. IF I fell, I wouldn't crawl for the next few meters, I would get back up and run.

When you’re running or hurrying in a room, in the woods, on the streets or anywhere, how often will you fall?

2.  I think he’s dead.

The Situation: Just when you thought your life was over, you somehow manage to get a lucky strike with a plank and the killer passes out.

Question 1: What will a horror character do?
He will slowly slip passed the killer without removing or confiscating any potential weapons and then carefully proceed upstairs to see if his friend is still alive, whereupon the killer will wake to life and continue the hunt.

Question 2: What would I do?
I would brutally kill him with his own weapon, no hesitation. He would not kill me with his last strength.

3.  Could you check out the cellar please?

The Situation: Weird things are going on in your house and there are noises and strange activity everywhere. Suddenly, you hear a louder noise coming from the cellar or the attic.

Question 1: What will a horror character do?
She’ll ask her partner to go check it out, while for some reason, she’ll wait for him. In many cases, either one of them will get in trouble. It could have helped to stick together!

Question 2: What would I do?
I would simply not split up, where you go I go.

4.  Disbelievers

The Situation:  A Family consisting of the parents and 1-3 children, at least one teenager have just moved into a suburban house. “Why so cheap?” they ask themselves, just before strange things starts happening in the house, especially to the teenager for some reason. The father, of course, won’t believe him or her, even though it’s pretty obvious something not right.

Question 1: What will a horror character do?
He, the father, will get mad and grumpy and call the rest of the family ungrateful. In the end, he will be the one to die, or at least almost die. He got it coming.

Question 2: What would I do?
It’s hard to say exactly how I would react, because haunted houses as depicted in movies does not exist. I guess I would listen to the family, why would they blame ghosts for not liking the house, if they haven’t showed any similar tendencies earlier in life.

5.  Hello!

The Situation: Nobody’s home but yourself,  you have no pets, and the door has been locked since you got in. Suddenly you hear a sound coming from the second floor.

Question 1: What will a horror character do?
Walk towards the staircase and carefully call out “Hello!?”

Question 2: What would I do?
Probably get over there, assuming there’s a perfectly logical explanation. I’m not saying I would live longer than the horror character, I just wouldn’t say “hello!?” every sound I hear.

What would you do?

Top 5 Crazy Scenes

Sometimes movies take me completely by surprise with a totally random crazy scene and sometimes even though the movie is already crazy. Sadly, it doesn't happen too often. If you know of one, name the movie, but don't tell me about the scene.

SPOILER ALERT! I RECOMMEND YOU NOT TO WATCH THE VIDEO CLIPS IF YOU INTEND TO WATCH THE MOVIE, BUT HAVEN'T DONE SO YET!

Also, I think it'd be hard to understand some of these scenes out of context. :)

Nr 5: It Happened One Night (1934)

The Hitchhiking scene

Can't find a youtube video of this scene.

The most popular scene from this movie seems to be the one where the two main characters are standing on the side of the road trying to get a lift. It's a great scene, but in my opinion it gets even better when they get in the car. The driver is completely insane.

Nr 4: Freaks (1932)

The Gooble gobble song

This is a crazy movie but still this scene surprised me. Don't know what else to say. Watch the movie before watching this if you're smart. This I think is one of those scenes you wouldn't understand without watching the whole movie. :)

Nr 3: Being John Malkovich (1999)

The Malkovich Malkovich scene

Great idea for a movie and this scene is insane. Charlie Kaufman is a crazy scriptwriter!

Nr 2: Braindead (1992)

This video can only be shown directly on youtube, possibly because of the age-limit. (click the link above)

Known as the goriest scene in cinema history. It can't get much crazier than this. "Party's over"

Nr 1: Evil Dead II (1987)

The Laughing scene

By far the craziest scene I've seen is this sick scene from Evil Dead II. Compared to this scene, the rest of the movie is normal, which it isn't. The lamp is my favorite.

Top 5 Opening Scenes

What's so great with a good opening scene is that it might quickly draw you into the movie, make you interested and tell you how the movie is going to be. I like an opening scene extra much if it gives me a certain feeling that makes me wanna rewatch it later. Also, great use of music is something I like very much.

Nr. 5 O Brother, Where Art Thou?

The cinematography, the song sang by the chain-gang prisoners followed by the escape of the three prisoners got me hooked to this movie right from the start. I know there are many objectively better opening scenes, but this is too much of a personal favorite to leave out of this list.

The story behind the song sang by the chain-gang is very interesting. You can read about it HERE

Nr. 4 2001: A Space Odyssey

One of the most unique opening sequences to a movie is the one seen in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The use of music in this opening scene as well as in the rest of the movie is too good to be true, which seems to be the case in many of Kubrick's movies.

Nr. 3 Melancholia

Upon watching this the first time, the opening sequence might put you off, thinking that the whole movie could be like this, but after watching the whole movie, it might be that you want to return to watch the beginning again. Visually beautiful, confusingly strange and made even better with beautiful classical music. It also gives you a feeling that continues throughout the whole movie.

Nr. 2 A Clockwork Orange

A love the music, the red and blue background color followed by Alex looking into the camera drinking milk, the set construction, costumes and Alex's presentation of himself and his droogs. Perfect opening scene that couldn't be better.

Nr. 1 Once Upon a Time In the West

My favorite opening scene from my favorite film. This YouTube clip doesn't view the complete opening sequence, it starts at about 5 minutes into the movie. I count the first 14 minutes as the opening scene. If you don't at all like this scene, you probably won't like the rest of the movie too much. It's slow, but only on the surface. This movie builds up atmosphere like no other movie and releases the energy built up by it better than any movie.

I would appreciate if you would comment and tell me about your favorite opening scenes!

Top 5 Quotes: Speeches

These are not in order, they're too different from each other to rank.

Top 5 Speeches

Nr. 1: Inglourious basterds

The Nazikillin' speech - "We're gonna be doing one thing, and one thing only. Killin' Nazis"
Nobody writes dialogue like Tarantino but I can't put my finger on what makes it so entertaining. Very strong performance by Brad Pitt as well.

Found a cool video of the speech on youtube:

Nr. 2: The Grapes of Wrath

The Liberty speech - "Where ever there's a cop beatin' up a guy. I'll be there"
A very powerful speech well acted by Henry Fonda, my favorite actor of older movies.
Everybody should listen to the song "The Ghost of Tom Joad" by Bruce Springstein and the cover by Rage Against the Machine.

Nr. 3: The Hangover

The Wolfpack speech - "I've just added two more guys to my wolfpack"
I don't know who wrote this speech, but I have to say much of the credit has to go to Zach Galifianakis for his acting. It's really thanks to him the movie was good, otherwise, it would've been decent. He couldn't save the sequel though in my opinion.

Nr. 4: Festen

The Unveiling Speech - "I realised that Helge was a very clean man, with all those baths"
This is perfect, if you haven't seen it, do now! The cold way Christian holds the speech, acting like there is nothing special about the speech and not giving away anything before the disclosure.

I suggest you watch the movie before watching this videoclip

Nr. 5: The Great Dictator

The Humanity Speech - "You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!"
A great attack on the Nazis by Chaplin.
